The Current State of Survival
~ a mildly angry forum post by Leaf ~
----------------------------------------------------------------

Since the recent reset of survival, there have been some good changes, and some bad ones. I'm sure a lot of effort was put into the reset, but I think a lot more playtesting or something should have been done. Snapcraft has had over 3 years to create a refreshing, user-friendly survival experience.

The Issues

TPS: Snapcraft is a relatively big server, with a fair amount of staff. You would think that they would be able to fix the glitches, exploits and bugs in a relatively timely manner. With the new reset, on the first day there was lag issues. I'd do /lag. 15tps. After it seemed to get worse, I did /lag again. 9 tps. This was unacceptable, but to Snapcraft's credit, it was fixed the same day. Now, I do think that the reset was good for the server as a whole, as the world was really old and barren.

New Plugins: If you've played before the reset, you'd know that the sponge, or protection block, system was generally simple and easy to use. Compared to the new reset's protection plugin, there are so many unnecessary settings and options for the protection plugin, it's nauseating. I'm fairly certain that the new plugin is custom coded, so you'd think that instead of having the command to add someone not be /protect region addplayer <player>, an extremely long command, and instead be like the old plugin's command, /ps add <player>. It was way simpler. I don't understand why Snapcraft even made a new protection plugin. I don't remember anyone complaining. I don't remember any issues. There's also some weird ender chest plugin that gives you 2 extra rows of space in your ender chest, and to me, it kind of ruins the vanilla aspect of the ender chests for me.

Randomly Generated Structures(?): Don't get me wrong, I thought this was a fantastic update to Snapcraft. But then, I realized (as far as I've seen) there are only 2 structures. A cozy mansion, and a jungle temple. And they generate way too often. I turn the corner, BOOM! Jungle Temple. What I'm trying to get at here is, if you're going to use a plugin like this at all, at least add more structures.

The Spawn: A short section, but I do dislike the spawn, as I really miss the random teleport pool that would help me get around the world without having to wait 15 minutes to do /rtp. It was a great addition. Now, there is nothing but a villager. A villager that just runs /rtp. It would make me and other people happier if it was re-implemented.

And, last but not least,

THE STABILITY: The stability and performance before the reset? Pretty much perfect. Just fine. No issues. After the reset? You're looking at server crashes every 5 minutes or so at certain times. Heck, while writing this forum post everyone was disconnected. It's embarrassing. I don't know what you guys did, but fix it. This is the reason people quit.

Things You've Done Right

New Plugins: While I do dislike the current protection plugin, I think it's a step in the right direction for a completely revamped system. Maybe make the settings menu less cluttered, and simplify the commands.

The World: I think that the recent reset to the world is a great change, as the old one was aging and barren. You would do a /rtp and there would be a half torn apart mansion, a wasteland of a shop, and an old grinder without a floor. The reset has completely revitalized the world.

Fixing of Old Bugs: One thing Snapcraft has done right is that they've fixed most of the old bugs that were present in the old world pre-reset.

The Conclusion

Since the reset, there have been a lot of changes. Some were great additions, and some completely ruined the user experience. While I do think these bugs should be fixed and some changes should be rolled back, I really think that Snapcraft has gone a step in the right direction with the reset. A few fixes, a few changes, and the survival experience will be overall way better.

In my honest opinion, the generated structures are amazing. I think they prevent others from getting grieved which is awesome. Now, I know there is griefing going on still but … I mean its always kind of been that way sadly. However, with proof, the staff are always quick to take care of those problems. Also, there are more than the two structures you have seen. There are little custom homes with tons of great loot as well as huge desert temples. You just have to look in different biomes. The reset is very new and the staff have reported constantly on how hard they are trying to fix these problems. Marten even said he's working while on his vacation to fix this stuff for us. I think we just need to be patient. Bugs are hard to fix...

I completely agree with you, I don't really think I've done enough exploring. I can't explore right now either, as the server kicks everyone out every 5 minutes.

Side Note: I'm not sure if this is fixed or not, but I heard voting was broken?
Voting is fixed.

I do agree with this however there are many reasons why they have implemented this new protection plugin, I do agree that the old plugin was simple and easy to understand and this one isnt. Also they could have put alot more testing into this main part of survival.

Randomly Generated Structures(?): Don't get me wrong, I thought this was a fantastic update to Snapcraft. But then, I realized (as far as I've seen) there are only 2 structures. I do dislike how little generated structures there are, but after a few months they will all be looted and kinda...pointless.

I do agree, It is annoying to have to wait 10-15mins (depending on rank) just to randomly teleport into the wilderness.

We are aware of the issues on release of which most are resolved at this point. No one could have for seen issues as we’ve done a ton of testing internally but when the server is under load things change. The random teleport pool was meant to have a cool-down which never worker, however I can see a shorter cool-down being beneficial and will look into changing that. Almost all of the performance issues have been addressed and or completely resolved.

we don't give a crap about the rtp cooldown. the current state of survival is a complete mess, it's been crashing like 10 times in the past hour, with rollbacks, it also crashed yesterday. the sponge plugin is complete trash, even tho the 'settings' feature is great, i mean.. would be great if the plugin was working correctly.
it's a good thing to be aware of these problems, it's another thing to do something about these.

The server hasn’t crashed in days though. There are zero outstanding issues with the sponge plugin. If you are having issues feel free to report them.
