If you know where the sponge is placed, go in it’s region and type in /protect unhinde and the sponge should appear. If you don’t know its location, type in /protect list and go to the sponge’s coordinates. Type in /protect unhide and the sponge should appear. If it doesn’t appear, something is wrong and the problem can’t be fixed.

Also, make sure the sponge isn’t behind a wall or somewhere else.
