Just wondering what would be more worth it. Spending the 8400 tokens on slicing 3 or spending a little more for explosive 5? Speaking in terms of token and ore accumulation, which would get the most overall?

Slicing is the best way of getting tokens.

If you add emerald and diamond blocks in your inventory before slicing you get the most cash plus enchant tokens.

As Ashie said, that's a good way to get money, and with the tokens you'll get, you could enchant an other pickaxe with explosive (later), to mine durring the slicing cooldown ;-)
