Farming issues

my sugar cane won't grow along with nether wart, which just stops at stage 2. Wheat is perfectly fine. Is it a server feature or what?

Seems like crops only grow when someone that is logged in is near them.

You need to load the chunks for the farms to grow. If no ones around they won’t grow.

That’s why most people create afk farms or
build the farms within chunks they’re close to.
