Can't use /friends

I can't type /friends. When I do, my game crashes and gives me an error. I'm playing on 1.8.7.

Here's the error:
The game crashed whilst rendering item
Error: java.lang.StringIndexOutOfBoundsException: String index out of range: 2

Try using 1.8.9 or 1.12.2 and if that doesnt work make a bug report here on the forums https://snapcraft.net/support-tickets/open
Change the department to "bug reports"
