To Help you enjoy this years eclipse I put together this fact sheet and instructions.
An eclipse is a very special but very common event.
After I saw a huge amount of misconceptions about the eclipse of August 21, 2017 I figured it would be a great idea to post a forum entry about it.
What is it? This event will be a solar eclipse when the moon goes between the viewer and the sun. This type of eclipse is when the moons umbral shadow will totally block out the sun. On average you have to wait 300 or more years between these events. At the moment of totality the landscape around the elipse will be as dark as late evening. Certain night time bugs will come out, animals will act very strange, and some types of night flowers might open up. People are usually very frightened and some scientists say strange events can follow an eclipse.
Where will this one be? The path of totality is easy to figure out at NASA's website for the event. https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/eclipse-maps
How can I safely view it? You can use a number 14 welders helmet or stronger. At this point if you can buy real solar glasses go for it, but you can also make a box that lets you safely see it. The instructions are as follows: https://youtu.be/0QOLPHHDGj8. I followed his directions and i'm not disappointed.
Warnings and Danger.
1. Do not look right at the eclipse until the umbra is over the sun 100%. You must be at the point of totality to do this. Other wise don't remove your glasses or look outside of your box. There is a flash right before and after totality that can blind you instantly.
2. Do not use your phone to see it. Your phone will go blind just like you might.
3. Avoid viewing the event in an area that is unsafe. If you think that looking at the sun through a box or in glasses is a distraction from things like cars, other people, or obstacles then choose a different spot.
4. Welding gear, and sunglasses wont be strong enough! If your eclipse glasses do not have the correct tint and a NASA approved seal they are potentially fake.
5. Do not forget sunscreen and drinking water. The sun is always hot in the summer.
SPECIAL NOTE
At the time I wrote this the US government is warning people not to try to travel past the first point of contact which will be near dawn on August 21, 2017. In the areas of totality they are estimating that normal travel will take hours or possibly days. Hundreds of millions of people are coming from all over the world to see the event.
