Sponge Exploit?

My kids and I have a nice little set-up where we set our sponges next to each other (taking into consideration the appropriate spacing to ensure there were no coverage gaps between our areas) to protect a large area of land. We've not played much recently but I still log in from time to time to check on everything.

Today I logged in and saw that one of my kids had their house looted and mostly destroyed. When I went to check it out, their region was gone and their sponge had been removed. How is that possible?

Sponges will expire after a set amount of time. The owner of the expired sponge must be offline for 45d for the sponge to disappear.
