Purchasing Island Expansions

I have a question about the purchasing of island expansions. I was wondering exactly how that purchase worked.

I currently have a 100 x 100 plot and let's say I purchase a 250 x 250. Would this add an equal amount of space around all sides or expand out from a corner? If expanding from a corner, which one would it expand from?

Equal space around (E = existing island, N = new island expansion):

Expansion out from one corner (E = existing island, N = new island expansion):

[N][N][N]
[E][N][N]

I am planning on purchasing one but it won't be for another month and I'd like to plan for the future accordingly.

The center will remain the center, so it would be the first one.

Yeah, it would spread out from the middle to the max area you can build to, to vaguely specify what @Maarten has said .
