What is the recommended version to play prisons on?

I play on 1.8.9 because of the PvP advantage of no swing cool down. I've heard other people say I shouldn't play with 1.8.9 on this server. What version should be best for this server? Also I know other servers say that it's best to use a certain version for them on snapcraft.

The recommended versions on the server are 1.8.9 or 1.12.2, if you're on 1.12.2 you will still pvp like you would in 1.8.9
